Released by E-mu in the late 1980s, the Emax is a beautifully warm and gritty 8-voice, variable-rate, 12-bit sampler feeding 8 analog filters and 8 analog VCAs. Other than E-mu’s own Emulator samplers, there really isn’t much else like them. The user interface is menu-driven but very thoughtfully laid-out and quick once you get the hang of it and all of the menu items are written right on the front panel. From immaculately gritty drums to huge warm synth pads, leads, and basses, there really isn’t much you can’t dial in sonically on one of these. Without question one of the best samplers ever made.
