sampler
sonic collage
We love samplers. While most instruments work on the level of notes and rhythms, samplers allow a musician to work directly with pieces of sound. Because of the amazing creative things that early hardware samplers made possible, their sonic imprint is the signature sound of countless genre-defining tracks from the 1980’s and 1990’s (the era when samplers first became commonplace musical tools).
time for a checkup
The large majority of hardware samplers are now at least 20 years old and as a result are operating well outside of their intended service life. Thankfully most of these machines were built to a professional studio standard, and are well made, well documented, and as a result repairable.
typical repair work:
Power supply rebuild / replacement
Diagnosing and repairing functional issues
SCSI fuse replacement (self-resetting)
Tact switch replacement (permanently fix stiff or broken buttons)
Board-by-board functional and cosmetic restoration
up to speed
Progress made in technology since 1985 means some upgrades are possible to these early digital sound machines. These include:
Display upgrades (OLED/VFD/LCD)
Modern storage upgrades (SCSI2SD and similar card, floppy emulators)
Pad upgrades, modifications, and repairs
